This week Newsweek magazine's banner reflected this headline.
Since then, there have been many to take exception and challenge the representation. Especially the timing of holy week. Which I dare say was the point after all. What better way to generate interest and potential readership for a major glossy print weekly, (especially one like others that is suffering from loss of subscriptions) than to challenge Christianity in the most Christian nation on the planet during holy week.
But what aside from potentially selling more media based hubris has been accomplished?
I read the article. The End of Christian America Nothing particularly earth shattering in the statistics represented, especially once you consider the changing demographics of the regions involved (The north west and the north east regions of America).
And there is the noted absence of corresponding numbers for other parts and regions of the nation. What of the south where a resurgence of faith and Christian values has been witnessed in recent years? And what of the west and the mid west and those segments of the east now infiltrated with Latin Americans and Mexicans. They are Catholics one and all are they not? Do their numbers not count? Or are they only considered when specific interests require support of numbers?
There it was, an old term with new urgency: post-Christian. This is not to say that the Christian God is dead, but that he is less of a force in American politics and culture than at any other time in recent memory. To the surprise of liberals who fear the advent of an evangelical theocracy and to the dismay of religious conservatives who long to see their faith more fully expressed in public life, Christians are now making up a declining percentage of the American population.
And are these numbers not possibly affected by the bloating of our population with illegal Latin Americans? Those that are purposely counted or not counted at any given time, based upon the desired political outcome of the supposed statistics by special interests?
I always knew that Mark Twain was on to something when he said "There are lies, there are damn lies and their are statistics."
And the Newsweek ploy this week is only the most recent example of statistics in play by mainstream media and how they will cook the books to sell newspapers and magazines.
