Another 2/9 Marine comes home tomorrow

Lance Cpl. Joseph R. Giese comes home tomorrow. His funeral will be Saturday and he will be interred at the National Cemetery in Canton Georgia.

I pray that we always remember them..........


A 24-year-old Marine from Barrow County was killed Friday during combat in Afghanistan. Lance Cpl. Joseph R. Giese, of Winder, died as a result of a hostile incident while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, the U.S. Marines said.

Giese was an infantryman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team-1, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based in Camp LeJeune, N.C. He joined the Marine Corps in July 2007 and was promoted to lance corporal Sept. 1, 2008.

Giese deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from September 2008 to April 2009. In July, he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Giese is survived by his wife.
