Gingrich to debate Cain

The announcement of the first of his Lincoln Douglas style debates will certainly garner attention with the media and hopefully pique the interests of American voters. Newt Gingrich is the most astute and capable debater in the entire political spectrum in my opinion and the man best suited to literally take Obama apart in any debate. But can he win the GOP nomination? I think he can now. Barring missteps, Newt Gingrich is the one candidate poised to truly take down the Obama presidency in the eyes of the American people.

Will his debate against Herman Cain be the beginning of things to come? I don't thinks so. Obama would be a fool to debate Gingrich head on 'mano y mano.' And Gingrich will be foolish if he does more than spar with Cain. In my opinion, there is an inherent danger to debating Herman Cain and that danger is that Gingrich may be perceived as arrogant if he chooses to sharpen his claws on Cain in this debate.

My advice, go easy Newt. Parry and thrust and demonstrate reserved class and respect for Herman Cain and his supporters. Let the people make the decision on measured intellect and coherent discussion. Don't make it a fight and you will win.

Cain, Gingrich set for Lincoln-Douglas debate

The Texas Tea Party Patriots will host a "modified Lincoln-Douglas debate," with Republican candidates Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain confirming their attendance.

Bill O'Sullivan, treasurer of the group, told National Review Online that the recent debates have been "superficial" and "frustrating."

Gingrich, the former House speaker, is a big proponent of debates in the mode of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, who in their 1858 campaign for a U.S. Senate seat in Illinois took their ideas directly to the people in seven congressional districts across the state.

Lincoln lost the 1858 Senate race (back when state legislatures picked U.S. senators) but defeated Douglas, among others, to win the presidency in 1860.
